107 Up-to-Date ChatGPT Statistics & User Numbers Oct 2023
Launched on March 14, OpenAI says this latest version can process up to 25,000 words – about eight times as many as GPT-3 – process images and handle much more nuanced instructions than GPT-3.5. GPT-3 was initially released in 2020 and was trained on an impressive 175 billion parameters making it the largest neural network produced. GPT-3 has since been fine-tuned with the release of the GPT-3.5 series in 2022. OpenAI, the company behind the viral chatbot ChatGPT, has announced the release of GPT-4. The chatbot’s popularity stems from the fact that it has the same abilities of ChatGPT but has full access to the internet, which ChatGPT does not have.
It’s important to note here that while ChatGPT may be the perfect off-the-shelf solution, it won’t cover all of your product needs and unless you’re using OpenAI API or plugins, you can’t integrate it with your tools. Open AI’s competitors, including Bard and Claude, are also taking steps in this direction, but they are not there just yet. It may change very soon though, especially with the update to Google Search and Google’s PaLM announced at the latest Google I/O presentation on 11/May 2023. To find that out and set up a coherent list of what ChatGPT and GPT-4 are missing, I’ve spoken to Monterail’s biggest AI enthusiasts, who work with generative AI almost every day. OpenAI released GPT-3 in June 2020 and followed it up with a newer version, internally referred to as “davinci-002,” in March 2022.

Its ability to understand images, larger context window, and steerability make it a valuable asset for various tasks and applications. GPT-4 is the fourth generation of the “Generative Pre-trained Transformer” language model developed by OpenAI. It is a powerful AI tool that can understand and generate natural language text, making it useful in various applications such as chatbots, language translation, and content creation. GPT-4 is highly anticipated in the AI community as it is expected to be more advanced and capable than its predecessor, GPT-3. The current, free-to-use version of ChatGPT is based on OpenAI’s GPT-3.5, a large language model (LLM) that uses natural language processing (NLP) with machine learning.
On top of this, OpenAI also displayed the potential of using images to initialise prompts. For example, the team showed an image of a fridge full of ingredients with the prompt “What can I make with these products?”. The AI has achieved a lot since it was announced, being embraced by huge companies, rejected by schools and used by millions of users each day. Met with equal parts controversy and praise, it is a truly divisive tool.
As baby boomers retire, German businesses turn to robots
In February 2023, Google launched its own chatbot, Bard, that uses a different language model called LaMDA. An example of how that could work would be to send an image of the inside of your fridge to the AI, which would then analyse the ingredients available before coming up with recipe ideas. At the moment this capability is only available through one of OpenAI’s partners, Be My Eyes.
This means that content generated by GPT-4—or any AI model—cannot demonstrate the “experience” part of Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (E-E-A-T). E-E-A-T is a core part of Google’s search quality rater guidelines and an important part of any SEO strategy. The Semrush AI Writing Assistant is a key alternative to GPT-4 for SEO content writing. This tool has been trained to assist marketers and SEO professionals to rank in search. This is why GPT-4 is able to do a notably broad range of generate code, take a legal exam, and write original jokes.
Tools like Auto-GPT give us a peek into the future when AGI has realized. Auto-GPT is an open-source tool initially released on GPT-3.5 and later updated to GPT-4, capable of performing tasks automatically with minimal human input. GPT-4 is currently only capable of processing requests with up to 8,192 tokens, which loosely translates to 6,144 words.
Furthermore, this kind of AI goes beyond the version paradigm that software traditionally follows, where a company releases version 3, version 3.5, and so on. This ability goes beyond spontaneously understanding how to do things like translate between languages. Something that isn’t talked about much is that AI researchers want to create an AI that can learn by itself. Of particular interest is that he envisions multimodal AI as a platform for building new business models that aren’t possible today. In a podcast interview (AI for the Next Era) from September 13, 2022, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman discussed the near future of AI technology.
